Dow's Q&A UtilitiesStarting with DTFSPECS, I have developed a suite of utility programs for use with Q&A databases. Here's a brief synopsis:DTFSPECS - Views, analyzes, and extracts programming and other specs. DTFDATA - Real-time data extraction program (can be used from Q&A 5.0 and others) DTFDOCTR - Checks databases for problems, repairs them, extracts data even if damaged. DTFMERGE - Utility for upgrading (i.e. copying data from similar but not identical dbs) DTFADMIN - Password and access rights report (for database administrators) DTFPASWD - Changes password for one user in multiple databases simultaneously DTFMAKE - Allows Q&A programmer to use powerful tools and techniques (like programming in C) DTFBOOST - Q&A enhancer (e.g. macros that can test the screen) DTFWIN - Q&A for Windows enhancer (would you believe macros in Windows?!) Here's just one example of what you can do with these utilities. Suppose you have customers using a set of databases you have developed. Some have an early version and you need to bring them up-to-date by sending them new databases so they can copy their data from old to new. The DTFMERGE program can look at the old and new databases and create a merge spec so they can copy the data correctly, even if field names have changed, even if there are whole new sections in the current version, even if things have been drastically rearranged. If you want a fully automated upgrade procedure, then DTFBOOST can be used to feed keystrokes to Q&A to guide it through the file copy procedure. DTFBOOST provides an intelligent macro capability for Q&A DOS. Send e-mail to info@johntdow.com for more information, or visit my Web site at http://www.johntdow.com |
